What is a C&P exam?

A Compensation and Pension exam is part of the VA disability claim process. The purpose of the exam is to gather medical information related to your claim and document findings requested by the VA.

A C&P exam is different from a regular medical appointment. During this visit, the examiner is not providing ongoing treatment, prescribing medication, making referrals, or deciding the outcome of your claim. The exam findings are submitted for review as part of your VA claim process.

What to expect at your exam

Your C&P exam may include a review of your medical history, questions related to your claimed condition, a focused physical exam, or other components requested by the VA.

The length of the visit can vary depending on the type of exam and the conditions being reviewed. Some exams are brief, while others may take longer. Throughout your visit, our goal is to provide a respectful, professional, and comfortable experience.

Before your appointment

To help your visit go smoothly, please plan to:

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early
  • Bring a valid photo ID
  • Bring your appointment confirmation or any instructions from Loyal Source
  • Wear comfortable clothing, especially if your exam involves range-of-motion testing
  • Contact Loyal Source as soon as possible if you are running late or unable to attend

If you have new non-VA medical records related to your claim, those should be submitted through the proper VA process before your exam. The clinic cannot submit records to the VA on your behalf during the appointment.
