IV therapy is everywhere right now. Walk through any trendy neighborhood and you'll probably pass a drip bar or mobile IV lounge offering hangover cures, beauty cocktails, and immunity boosters. Celebrities post about it. Wellness influencers swear by it. It's a booming industry.

That boom is part of the problem. When something becomes a lifestyle trend, it gets harder to separate what's real from what's marketing. People either assume IV therapy is a miracle fix for everything, or they dismiss it entirely as expensive water.

The truth, like most things in medicine, is somewhere in the middle. IV therapy has legitimate clinical uses. It also has limits. And the setting where you receive it matters more than most people realize.

IV infusion therapy at Thrive Health DPC

           How IV therapy works

The concept is simple. When you take vitamins, minerals, or fluids by mouth, they pass through your digestive system before reaching your bloodstream. That process takes time and your body doesn't absorb 100% of what you swallow. Some nutrients, especially magnesium and certain B vitamins, have notoriously low oral absorption rates.

IV therapy bypasses the gut entirely. Fluids and nutrients go directly into your bloodstream through a vein, which means your body gets the full dose immediately. That's not a gimmick. It's basic physiology, and it's why hospitals have used IV delivery for decades.

The question isn't whether IV delivery works. It does. The question is whether you specifically need it, for what, and whether the formulation you're getting actually makes clinical sense.

           What IV therapy can do

There are some situations where IV therapy offers a clear advantage over oral supplementation or just drinking more water.

           Acute dehydration.

If you're significantly dehydrated from illness, heat exposure, intense exercise, or travel, IV saline can rehydrate you faster and more effectively than drinking fluids alone. Your gut can only absorb so much water per hour. An IV bypasses that bottleneck. This is the most straightforward and well-supported use of IV therapy.

Nutrient repletion when absorption is compromised.

Some people don't absorb nutrients well through their digestive tract. This includes patients with inflammatory bowel conditions, those recovering from GI illness, people who've had certain surgeries, and some older adults. For these patients, IV delivery can make a real difference in their levels.

we offer at Thrive Health includes magnesium, B vitamins, ketorolac (an anti-inflammatory), ondansetron (for nausea), and dexamethasone. There's clinical support for IV magnesium in acute migraine treatment, and many of my patients who deal with recurring migraines have found this combination really effective when oral medications aren't cutting it.

When you're fighting off a virus and you can't keep food or fluids down, the combination of hydration, vitamin C, zinc, and B vitamins delivered intravenously can support recovery. This isn't about preventing every cold. It's about giving your body a boost when it's already under stress.

This is probably the most well-known IV formulation. It includes magnesium, calcium, B-complex, B12, and vitamin C. It was originally developed by Dr. John Myers in the 1960s for patients with chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and acute asthma. The evidence base is still evolving, but many providers, myself included, have seen it help with fatigue, sinus issues, menstrual cramping, and general recovery. It's our most commonly requested infusion.

           What IV therapy can't do

This is where I part ways with a lot of IV therapy marketing.

IV therapy is not a detox. Your liver and kidneys handle detoxification. No IV drip replaces or enhances that process.

It's not a weight loss treatment. If someone is marketing an IV drip as a way to lose weight, walk away.

It's not a substitute for a healthy diet. If your nutrition is solid, your sleep is good, and you're well-hydrated, you probably don't need regular IV infusions. The biggest gains from IV therapy come when there's an actual deficit or acute need, not as routine maintenance for someone who's already doing well.

It's not a hangover cure, at least not in the way it's sold. Can IV fluids help you feel better after a night of heavy drinking? Sure, because you're dehydrated. But framing it as a "cure" normalizes a pattern that lifestyle medicine would approach very differently.

I'm not saying people who get IV therapy for general wellness are doing something wrong.

But I am saying that if you're investing in IV drips while skipping your annual labs, ignoring your sleep, or not addressing the stress that's running your cortisol through the roof, you're spending money in the wrong order.

           Why the setting matters

Most people don't think about who is administering their infusion and in what context. That part matters.

At a drip bar, you're typically seeing a nurse or technician. They may be skilled, but they're working from a menu. They don't have your medical history. They don't know what medications you're taking. They don't know your lab values. They're not in a position to say "actually, based on your health picture, this formulation doesn't make sense for you" or "your symptoms might point to something that needs a different workup."

, IV therapy is part of your overall care. Before I recommend an infusion, I know your history. I know your labs. I know what medications you're on and whether there are any interactions to watch for. If you come in for hydration but your symptoms suggest something else is going on, I can catch that and pivot. That's the difference between a service and a clinical relationship.

Every infusion at Thrive Health is administered in a clinical setting with proper monitoring. We do a clinical evaluation before any infusion to confirm medical appropriateness. That's not a formality. It's how responsible care works.

Sometimes it's the right tool. If you're acutely ill, dehydrated, or depleted, it can help you feel better faster so you can get back to doing the things that actually build long-term health: eating well, moving your body, sleeping, managing stress.

When administered by a licensed provider in a clinical setting with proper screening, yes. At Thrive Health, every infusion is preceded by a clinical evaluation to confirm it's appropriate for you. We review your medical history, current medications, and any relevant lab work. Risks are low but can include minor bruising at the injection site, vein irritation, or in rare cases, allergic reaction. That's why the clinical setting and provider relationship matter.

How often should I get IV therapy?

It depends on why you're getting it. For acute situations like illness recovery, dehydration, or a migraine, it might be a one-time or occasional thing. Some patients with chronic fatigue or recurring symptoms find benefit from monthly infusions. We don't push a set schedule. We figure out what makes sense based on your health picture and adjust over time.

In many cases, yes. IV therapy administered by a licensed provider for medical purposes is often HSA/FSA eligible.

What's the difference between an IV drip bar and getting IV therapy at a primary care practice?

At a drip bar, you pick from a menu. At Thrive Health, your infusion is informed by your medical history, labs, medications, and overall health goals. I can identify when an infusion is the right call and when your symptoms actually point to something that needs a different approach. That clinical context is the difference between a service and actual care.

Most infusions take 45 to 60 minutes. You'll sit in a comfortable chair, and you're welcome to read, work, or just relax. We monitor you throughout.

Learn to build healthier habits this summer with simple steps. Start small & enjoy the season. Contact us for guidance!

The days are longer. The weather in the Pacific Northwest finally cooperates. There's a natural energy shift that makes it feel like a fresh start. And that instinct is worth following. Summer really is one of the better windows for building habits that stick.

But what I've seen happen over and over: people try to change everything at once. New diet, new workout routine, new sleep schedule, new supplements. A kind of mid-year-resolution. By August, they're burned out and back where they started. Sometimes worse, because now they've added guilt to the mix.

So let's talk about a different approach: one that uses the season to your advantage without turning your life upside down.

Start with one thing, not five

This is the advice I give most often at

, and it's the advice people resist the most. Everyone wants to fix everything at once. But behavior change research is pretty clear on this: stacking too many new habits at the same time is the fastest way to drop all of them.

Pick one area. Just one. Maybe it's drinking more water. Maybe it's walking after dinner. Maybe it's going to bed 30 minutes earlier. Whatever feels both meaningful and doable. Not the thing that sounds the most impressive. The thing you'll actually follow through on when Thursday rolls around and you're tired.

Once that one thing feels automatic, somewhere around 4 to 6 weeks for most people, you add the next one. This is slow. It's also how lasting change actually works.

One of the best things about summer in Washington is the light. We get nearly 16 hours of daylight in June, which is a huge shift from the dark, short days that make winter feel like survival mode.

That extra light does real things to your body. It supports your circadian rhythm, boosts serotonin, and makes it easier to be active without having to force yourself out the door in the dark. You don't need a complicated plan to take advantage of it.

A few things that work well for my patients:

           Morning light exposure.

Getting outside within the first hour of waking, even for 10 minutes, helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. You don't need to do anything specific. Walk to the mailbox. Drink your coffee on the porch. The point is sunlight hitting your eyes early in the day.

           After-dinner movement.

This doesn't mean a post-meal HIIT session. A 15 to 20 minute walk after your biggest meal can improve blood sugar regulation, aid digestion, and become one of the easiest habits to maintain because you're already done eating and the evening is still light.

           Outdoor meals.

Eating outside slows people down. It sounds small, but eating more slowly gives your body time to register fullness, and it turns a meal into something you're present for instead of something you're getting through.

           Rethink what "eating healthier" means

Summer makes this easier than any other season, and not because of willpower. The produce is better! Farmers markets are open. Grilling is simpler than most indoor cooking. The food itself does a lot of the heavy lifting if you let it.

But I want to push back on what most people mean when they say they want to "eat healthier." Usually, it means restriction. Cut carbs, cut sugar, cut calories. That framing almost always backfires because it turns food into an adversary.

with a member, we start with addition, not subtraction. What can you add to your plate that your body is probably missing? More vegetables, more fiber, more water, more whole foods that haven't been heavily processed. When you crowd the plate with better stuff, the less helpful stuff naturally takes up less space. No willpower required.

           A few practical summer moves:

Keep cut fruit and vegetables in the front of your fridge so they're the first thing you see. Make a big batch of grain salad or bean salad on Sunday that you can pull from all week. Grill extra protein when you're already grilling, so tomorrow's lunch is handled. Hydrate more than you think you need to, especially if you're spending time outside.

None of that requires a meal plan or a food tracking app, just requires a little forethought.

           Sleep doesn't take a vacation

This is the one that catches people off guard. Summer actually disrupts sleep for a lot of folks, and they don't connect the dots.

Late sunsets make it harder to wind down. Social schedules pick up. Warmer temperatures can interfere with the body's natural cooling process that triggers deep sleep. Travel throws off routines. And if you have kids home for the summer, your entire schedule might shift without you realizing it.

Sleep is one of the foundational pillars

of the lifestyle medicine approach for a reason. Poor sleep affects your hormones, your blood sugar, your appetite, your mood, your immune function, and your ability to make good decisions about everything else on this list. You can eat perfectly and exercise daily, but if you're sleeping five hours a night, your body is still running on fumes.

           A few things that help:

Keep your bedroom cool. 65 to 68 degrees is the sweet spot for most people. Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask, because a 9pm sunset and a 5am sunrise will absolutely shorten your sleep if your room isn't dark. Try to keep your wake time consistent, even on weekends. The urge to sleep in is real, but your circadian rhythm doesn't know it's Saturday.

           Stress doesn't disappear in summer

There's a cultural assumption that summer is supposed to be relaxing. For some people, it's the opposite. Childcare logistics get more complicated. Work doesn't slow down. Financial pressure from vacations, camps, and activities can pile up. And if you're watching everyone else post their best summer life on social media while you're just trying to get through the week, that comparison adds its own weight.

I bring this up because stress is not a soft topic. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which affects your blood sugar, your blood pressure, your digestion, your sleep, and your ability to lose weight. It's a physiological problem, not a mindset problem.

You don't need to meditate for an hour or take a spa day to manage it (though if you can, go for it). What works for most of my patients is smaller and more consistent: a 5-minute breathing exercise before bed, a firm boundary around work email after 7pm, saying no to one thing per week that you don't actually want to do, or just naming what's stressing you out loud to someone you trust.

If stress is a major factor in your health picture, that's exactly the kind of thing we dig into during

. It's not separate from your physical health. It is your physical health.

The real goal isn't a summer body

The wellness industry makes a lot of money convincing people that summer is a deadline. Get the body. Hit the goal. Look a certain way by July.

That pressure backfires for most people. It leads to unsustainable diets, over-exercising, and a cycle of starting and stopping that erodes your confidence in your own ability to change.

The real opportunity with summer isn't about a 90-day transformation. It's about using a season that naturally supports healthier behavior to build 2 or 3 habits that carry you through the fall and winter, when it gets harder. Think of it as groundwork, not a finish line.

A common starting point is half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 160 pounds, that's roughly 80 ounces per day, and more if you're active or spending time in the heat. But hydration needs vary. If you're a Thrive Health member, we can talk about what makes sense for your body, especially if you're dealing with fatigue, headaches, or blood pressure issues that might be hydration-related.

That's not a character flaw. It usually means the approach was wrong, not you. Most habit-change advice ignores the context of your actual life, your schedule, your family, your stress, your health conditions. When we build a plan at Thrive Health, we account for all of that. And the ongoing access you get through

What is a lifestyle medicine provider, and how is it different from traditional primary care?

Most of us grew up with the same healthcare experience. You get sick. You wait weeks for an appointment. You sit in a room for 10 minutes. You leave with a prescription. Repeat.

That model works fine for a broken arm or strep throat. But for the things that actually keep people stuck, the fatigue that won't quit, the blood sugar that keeps climbing, the weight that comes back no matter what you try, a 10-minute visit and a new medication aren't going to cut it.

That's the gap lifestyle medicine fills. And it's the reason I built Thrive Health DPC the way I did.

So what is lifestyle medicine, exactly?

Lifestyle medicine is a board-certified medical specialty that uses evidence-based behavioral changes as the primary treatment for chronic disease. I know that sounds clinical, so here's what it means in plain language: instead of only managing your symptoms with medication, we look at the daily habits and patterns that are driving your health problems in the first place.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine recognizes six pillars that make up this approach:

           Nutrition (whole food, plant-forward eating)

           Physical activity

           Sleep

           Stress management

           Social connection

Avoiding risky substances like tobacco and excess alcohol

None of those are new ideas. Your grandmother probably told you to eat your vegetables and get some sleep. The difference is that lifestyle medicine treats these as actual clinical interventions, not just nice advice. There's a growing body of research showing that targeted changes in these areas can prevent, slow, and in some cases reverse conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and obesity.

How is this different from traditional primary care?

I want to be clear: traditional medicine saves lives every day, and I have deep respect for it. I'm not anti-medication. I prescribe when it's the right call.

But the traditional primary care model has some real structural problems that make it hard for your healthcare provider to help you with the kind of care that actually changes outcomes.

The time problem. The average primary care visit in the U.S. is about 18 minutes. In that window, your provider needs to review your chart, address your concerns, run through any screenings, and document everything for insurance. There is very little room to talk about what you're eating, how you're sleeping, what's stressing you out, or what your daily routine actually looks like. Those conversations take time, and the insurance-based model doesn't incentivize time.

The treatment-first approach. Most traditional practices are set up to react to problems once they show up. Your A1C is too high? Here's metformin. Your blood pressure is elevated? Here's lisinopril. The medication might be appropriate, but if nobody is helping you understand what pushed those numbers up, you're treating the dashboard light without opening the hood.

The follow-up gap. Even if your healthcare provider gives you lifestyle recommendations ("try to exercise more," "cut back on sodium"), there's often no system for checking in, adjusting the plan, or holding you accountable between visits. You're on your own for 6 months until the next appointment.

A lifestyle medicine provider works differently because the entire model is designed around sustained behavior change, not episodic treatment.

What does a visit with a lifestyle medicine provider look like?

At Thrive Health, your first visit is long. Not because I'm slow, but because I need to actually understand your life. We talk about what you eat, when you eat, how you sleep, what your stress looks like, what you've tried before, and what's gotten in the way.

From there, we build a plan together. Not a pamphlet. Not a generic "eat healthier and exercise more." An actual plan that fits your schedule, your preferences, your budget, and your family.

And then we follow up. Often. Because knowing what to do and actually doing it are completely different things, and that gap is where most people get stuck.

Because Thrive Health is also a Direct Primary Care practice, my members have unlimited access to me. You can message me, schedule a same-day visit, or hop on a video call. There are no copays, no prior authorizations, no insurance hoops. That access is what makes the lifestyle medicine side actually work. It's hard to sustain change if you can only talk to your provider twice a year.

           Who is this for?

People come to Thrive for all kinds of reasons. Some are dealing with chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or autoimmune issues and are tired of just adding medications. Some are generally healthy but feel stuck, low energy, poor sleep, brain fog, stubborn weight. Some want a provider who actually has the time to listen and who looks like them.

That last part matters to me personally. I started Thrive Health because I saw how many people in the Federal Way and Tacoma area, especially Black, brown, and underserved communities, were falling through the cracks of a system that wasn't built with them in mind. Lifestyle medicine gives me a way to provide more equitable, more personal care that gets upstream of the chronic diseases disproportionately affecting these populations.

Does lifestyle medicine replace traditional care?

No. It complements it. If you need medication, I'll prescribe it. If you need a referral to a specialist, I'll make that happen. If something is urgent, we address it.

The difference is that medication is not the starting point and ending point of every conversation. It's one tool in a larger toolkit. And for many patients, the lifestyle interventions end up reducing or eliminating the need for some medications over time. That's not a promise; it depends on the person and the condition. But it happens more often than most people expect.

What to look for in a lifestyle medicine provider

If you're searching for a lifestyle medicine provider near Federal Way or Tacoma, here are a few things worth checking:

Are they trained or board certified in lifestyle medicine through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine? Not every provider who talks about "wellness" has formal training in this field.

Do they have the time to actually work with you? A provider who sees 25 patients a day probably can't give you the 45-minute visits this approach requires. The DPC model is one of the few practice structures that supports this kind of care.

Do they follow up between visits? Lifestyle change is not a one-appointment deal. You need ongoing support, check-ins, and the ability to adjust your plan as you go.

Do they listen to you? This sounds basic, but it's the thing I hear about most from new members. They've never had a provider who sat down, asked real questions, and actually waited for the answer.

           The bottom line

Lifestyle medicine is not a trend or an alternative therapy. It's a clinical approach to the chronic health problems that traditional medicine, on its own, hasn't been able to solve. And when you pair it with a Direct Primary Care model, where your provider actually has the time and freedom to practice this way, the care starts to look very different.

If you're in the Federal Way or Tacoma area and you want to know what this looks like in practice, I'd love to talk. You can schedule a free intro call or learn more about membership.

Frequently asked questions

Is lifestyle medicine covered by insurance?

Lifestyle medicine itself is a clinical approach, and many of the services involved (lab work, office visits, counseling) can be billed to insurance in a traditional setting. At Thrive Health, we operate as a Direct Primary Care practice, which means your membership covers your care directly. Many of our members pair their DPC membership with an HSA or a high-deductible health plan. You can now use HSA funds to pay for DPC memberships, which makes this even more accessible.

Can lifestyle medicine help with weight loss?

Yes. But we approach it differently than a diet program. Instead of focusing on restriction or a number on the scale, we work on the underlying patterns: what you're eating, how you're sleeping, how stress and hormones are affecting your metabolism, and what a sustainable routine looks like for your body and your life. Many members see real shifts in body composition over time, especially when we use tools like our InBody 580 body composition scanner to track progress beyond just weight.

Do I still need a separate healthcare provider if I see a lifestyle medicine provider?

At Thrive Health, I am your primary care provider. You don't need a separate provider for routine care. I handle everything from annual physicals and sick visits to chronic disease management and preventive screenings. If you need specialist care, I coordinate referrals as part of your membership.

What conditions can lifestyle medicine treat?

The evidence is strongest for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and certain autoimmune conditions. But the approach applies broadly. Sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, anxiety, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances all have lifestyle components that respond well to the right interventions.

How is Thrive Health DPC different from a wellness clinic?

Thrive Health is a licensed primary care practice, not a wellness spa or supplement shop. I'm a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. The care I provide is clinically grounded and medically supervised. We also offer ancillary services like IV therapy and body composition scanning, but those are complements to your primary care, not the main offering.

Learn how Direct Primary Care with Thrive Health DPC makes healthcare easier, more affordable, and more personalized for busy families.

Between work, school, and endless to-dos, healthcare can feel like just another chore for busy families. Thrive Health DPC is here to change that. With our Direct Primary Care (DPC) membership model, you can finally have convenient, affordable care designed to fit your lifestyle.

Here are five ways DPC benefits families:

           1. Same-Day or Next-Day Appointments

No more waiting weeks to see a provider. Whether your child has an earache or you need a quick check-up, we’ll get you in right away.

           2. Unlimited Access to Care

Your membership includes unlimited office visits, telehealth, and messaging—so you can get answers when you need them, without extra fees.

           3. Transparent Pricing

No surprise bills. Just simple, age-based monthly membership pricing. Plus, discounts for couples, students, and families.

           4. Whole-Person Focus

We don’t just treat symptoms. We incorporate lifestyle medicine—nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management—to help your whole family thrive.

           5. Peace of Mind

Knowing you can call, text, or video chat with your provider anytime gives you confidence that your family’s health is always supported.

At Thrive Health DPC, we make healthcare simple, affordable, and personalized. Families in Federal Way and the surrounding communities now have an option that keeps wellness at the center of care.

Explore how Thrive Health DPC uses lifestyle medicine to prevent and reverse chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Did you know that 80% of chronic diseases in the U.S. are related to lifestyle factors such as poor nutrition, inactivity, and stress? At Thrive Health DPC, we use Lifestyle Medicine to help patients prevent—and in many cases, reverse—conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Discover how Thrive Health DPC combines direct primary care with lifestyle medicine to provide accessible, preventive, and whole-person healthcare.

Healthcare today can feel complicated, expensive, and impersonal. At Thrive Health DPC, we believe it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s why we’ve built a practice around Direct Primary Care (DPC) and Lifestyle Medicine—two powerful approaches that work together to keep you healthier for the long run.

           What is Direct Primary Care?

DPC is a membership model where you pay a low monthly fee for unlimited access to your primary care provider. No copays. No insurance red tape. Just direct access when you need it most—whether that’s same-day or next-day appointments, telehealth, or unlimited messaging with your provider.

           How Lifestyle Medicine Fits In

Unlike traditional practices that focus on managing symptoms, we use lifestyle medicine to address the root causes of illness. That means helping you make sustainable improvements in nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, and more.

           Why It Matters

Chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are often preventable—and sometimes reversible—through lifestyle changes. By combining DPC with lifestyle medicine, Thrive Health DPC offers care that is accessible, preventive, and deeply personalized.

At Thrive Health DPC, your membership includes unlimited visits, annual labs, and an InBody body composition scan, plus opportunities to add services like IV hydration and group health workshops. This is care built around you, not insurance companies.
